The former 3 Alarm Studio could be remembered as more than a footnote in the career of legendary record producer, the late Chips Moman.
It’s slated to become the next home of a charity that’s harnessing the power of music to transform young lives.
The Memphis Music Initiative, a nonprofit music education group, has leased former Memphis Fire Station No. 3 and expects to move in early next year, executive director Darren Isom said.
Standing at the intersection of civil rights (Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue) and Memphis music (B.B. King Boulevard), “It couldn’t be in a more perfect place, just a couple blocks from Beale Street and Clayborn Temple,” Isom said. The church was a rallying point for key civil rights marches.
The initiative, housed temporarily at Crosstown Concourse, signed a lease for 10,000 square feet in the historic building, said Darrell Cobbins of Universal Commercial Real Estate, who helped the tenant scour the city for the right location.
The historic firehouse at the corner of B.B. King and Martin Luther King boulevards, next to the FedExForum Downtown, will soon be occupied for the first time since it was home to a pop-up bar in 2015.
Memphis Music Initiative (MMI), the diversity-focused music nonprofit, will occupy the building’s 10,000 square feet starting in January.

The old firehouse at the corner of B.B. King Boulevard and Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue has gone through many incarnations since the 1800s, including stints as a recording studio, nightclub and pop-up beer garden.
Now it can add one more to the list – office.
The Memphis Music Initiative (MMI), a local nonprofit organization, recently signed a 10,000-square-foot lease to move its headquarters into the iconic Downtown structure, marking a new chapter in the building’s long history.
Darrell Cobbins, president and CEO of Universal Commercial Real Estate LLC, represented MMI in the deal, while Benjamin Orgel and Adam Slovis represented the landlord, Orgel Family LP.
